Vincent Cannestra, M.D.

Vincent P. Cannestra, MD is one of the foremost total joint specialists in the Chicago area. He graduated with distinction from Northwestern University majoring in Neurobiology and Physiology. He received his medical degree in 1993 from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and went on to complete his orthopaedic residency at Northwestern. From 1998 to 1999, Dr. Cannestra pursued an extra year of extremely specialized training in total joint replacement and complicated adult joint reconstruction surgery at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Lukeís Medical Center in Chicago. There he studied under the auspices of Drs. Jorge Galante, Aaron Rosenberg, Wayne Praposky, Richard Berger, and Joshua Jacobs, all well known throughout the international community for their work and research in arthritis and joint replacement. Dr. Cannestra is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. In addition, he has been recognized as a specialist in his field as well as in research, receiving numerous honors and awards throughout his career. In 1997, he won the Howard Schneider Memorial Award from the Illinois Orthopaedic Society for his research. In 1998, in Acapulco Mexico, he received the Dallas B. Phemister Prize for Excellence in Medical Writing from the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association. In 2001, Dr. Cannestra was awarded the Elks Distinguished Citizenship Award for outstanding and meritorious service to humanity. Dr. Cannestra has authored and coauthored many articles which have been published by professional journals including The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and Seminars in Arthroplasty. He has also authored articles for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, contributing to their CD-ROM The Arthritic Knee. Currently, Dr. Cannestra continues to lecture and instruct physicians around the country. He is frequently asked to lecture to orthopaedic surgeons well as to other physicians including those in family practice, internal medicine, and rehabilitative medicine. Dr. Cannestra continues his work in orthopaedic surgery and has developed several instruments for the improvement of joint replacement surgery. These included instruments to measure leg lengths during hip replacement surgery, specialized clamps for fracture surgery and alignment guides for knee replacement surgery. These instruments continue to be used today and are marketed both in the United States and abroad. Currently, Dr. Cannestra is serving as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, IL and served as Assistant Chairman of the Department from July 2006 through June 2008. He also has been a sitting member of the board of directors for the Midwest Orthopaedic Network as well as the Tri-County and HealthSelect Independent Physician Associations. In keeping with his commitment to the community and indigent care, Dr. Cannestra volunteers his time and expertise to his Children’s Clinic. This clinic, initially for families without insurance, currently sees all kids regardless of the family’s ability to pay. Dr. Cannestra oversees and staffs his clinic with other volunteers to provide free orthopaedic care to infants, adolescents, and teenagers. This clinic offers a variety of services free of charge including physical therapy, splinting, x-rays, MRI scans, and when necessary, surgery. Although Dr. Cannestra primarily focuses on the non-surgical and surgical treatment of arthritis, he also provides various treatments for a multitude of orthopaedic conditions including shoulder, elbow, wrist and ankle pain, sports injuries, tendonitis, rotator cuff injuries, ligament tears, carpal tunnel syndrome, and fractures.
